Inclusive College or University for Adults With An Intellectual Disability

Students follow a course of study for 4-5 years and participate fully in typical campus life with attendant rights and responsibilities.

Any prospective student wishing to can apply to the project.  The selection is based on motivation, study goals, level of family or other support and interests.  Prior academic performance is not a criterion for selection.

While the decision and responsiblity of the course load rests with the student, there will be ongoing consultation between faculty, staff and the student.

An office of STEPS Forward will be located on campus.  A coordinator and facilitator will be responsible for facilitating the students inculsion in all areas of campus life. They will not provide tutoring in basic skills.

At completion the student will receive a diploma of completion and participate in a graduation ceremony.  This is not a degree granting program. 

Guiding Principles:

  • Students will attend the post-secondary institution on an inclusive basis. There will be no separate classes, classrooms or curricula.

  • The education experience will strive to be coherent with the experience of the typical post-secondary student.  For example, students would take 2-5 courses per semester and attend classes 1-2 hours per day.  The rest of their time would be spent in clubs, cafeteria, fitness activities or library.  Students will spend approximately four years at the institution and will have a graduation ceremony.

  • Students are preparing to become active, valued, sociable members of our  society. Students will be active, valued members of the educational community. Students will not be encouraged to get different types of jobs from other students.  Students will not serve as research subjects or practicum opportunities for other students or faculty members.

  • The role of staff is to facilitate. Staff do not provide direct instruction.

  • Classroom learning is only one aspect of the experience of post-secondary education.  Students will be encouraged to participate in other recreational, social and athletic activities.

  • Admission is not dependent on labels, academic prerequisites or I.Q. Applicants are screened to determine what they want to do, level of motivation, and goals.  All who are interested will be interviewed.
